It is SEAD Gallery’s distinct pleasure to announce the advent of our newest exhibit, “Sublime Encounters: Science & Art Collide”, opening on June 7. The brilliant artist behind this stunning collection of paintings is Becky Phillips, Professor of Fine Art at Blinn College here in Bryan.
Phillips’ work is largely inspired by science: neuroscience, behavioral evolution in humans, migration of humans, archeology and, most recently, particle physics. Her current collection is inspired by the recent uncovering of the Higgs-Boson particle: after reading about the discovery, she “exploded with an exaggerated and dramatic energy like a blast”, and the result is the stunning series soon to be showcased at SEAD Gallery. One of the founding pillars of SEAD is Science (along with Engineering, Art and Design), and Becky Phillips’ electric, beautifully mastered paintings mesh with our vision for the gallery in an impeccable form.
Within the layers of painting are a smorgasbord of recognizable objects that Phillips has brought together from the chaos of her junk drawer, mirroring the process of matter forming into mass: from tools, rubber bands, a broken strand of pearls, they are a clustered outer expansion, dancing around refracted light. Her series of ten paintings seem to reenact the collision itself, each drawing the viewer in with their ethereal colors and unique, chaotic beauty.
The SEAD Gallery opening of “Sublime Encounters: Science & Art Collide”, will be held on June 6, with the exhibit opening to the public on June 7. We look forward to sharing this breathtaking collection with you!
