Piece of the Week: Near the Coast

Our feature piece this week, “Near the Coast,” is one of David’s more forthcoming paintings, however, it still wears the same veil of ambiguity that makes his style so unique. The cool color palette of sea foam greens and ocean blues confirms what the title reveals – this landscape is indeed near the coast. As is common with David’s work he uses a variety of techniques to infuse his oil enamels with telling details and a touch of the natural.

The violet in the foreground has been brushed and scratched to reveal golden dune grasses. The middle ground is composed of sinister purples and blues that aptly portray the harshness of the rocky shoreline. The aquamarine waves wash into the jagged rocks with the lazy rhythm of low-tide. Further out to sea, faint white-caps disappear into misty grey skies that grumble indolently – full of empty threats.

David’s “Near the Coast” attests in convincing fashion to David’s ability to capture landscapes in a way that few can. By not laboring over the details, David’s focus is shifted to the overall mood the landscape exudes. That seemingly insignificant fact is what makes David’s collection of landscapes capable of such honesty. Instead of lies, there is truth in their omission.
