The simplicity of this piece is deceiving. Anguspaul wanted to break light and dark down to their simplest forms which,in this case, came in the form of three matches. At first glance it looks like there are only four colors in the entire painting- yellow, red, black, and white. If the art-lover looks closer they will find hints of green, blue, and purple embedded into the seemingly stark black background. Matches is a play on light and dark which, even in their simplest forms, are never truly simple. They hold a complexity that can only be seen if one takes a moment and looks deeper.
Below you will find the artist’s audio commentary. Come in this week and challenge yourself to see past the black and find the colors of the background. We’re open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00am to 6:00pm.
